2. Directory of NGOs Operational in Jordan.

:: Background and Description

There is a huge number of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) spread all over the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. To date there are over 700 NGOs registered at General Union of Voluntary Societies (GUVS), and operating under the umbrella of the Ministry of Social Development (MoSD). Some of these NGOs are more active than others. This directory aims at providing its users with some information on a number of these NGOs.

GDF undertook relevant research to develop a system to catalogue all logistical and technical information on some currently active non-governmental organizations in Jordan to produce a capacity-oriented, information directory of NGOs.

The GDF directory, is the first English language directory of this sort. It comprises information on both indigenous and international organizations working in the field of social development, mainly (but not limited to) those registered at the MoSD, and which have demonstrated their capacity to successfully carry out all or several phases of the project cycle. In addition, a number of local grass-roots and CBOs, which have not been selected for profiling, are listed under two separate categories.

The main objective behind this directory, is to serve as a tool for providing basic information on the NGO sector and on NGOs in Jordan, to be used by researchers and donors. It is also aimed at serving as a mechanism for enhancing exchange of information among the different NGOs themselves, for mutual co-operation, and for co-ordinating their efforts to complement each other, and enhance replication of successful endeavors.
